Visiting a Thai Market

What is the first thing you think about when deciding what to do in a new city? Yeah, sure, you want to check out that amazing hiking trail with the coastal views or wander through that world-renowned museum or get the photograph with the famous art sculpture but seriously now, let's be honest with ourselves. You want food. First and foremost, above all else, a traveler's gotta eat.

When I found out that I would be going to Thailand, I was pretty excited about all the great meals ahead of me. So excited, in fact, that my husband and I made a homemade Thai dish at home one week before we left. Unfortunately, we used leftover meat for that dish and apparently it sat in the refrigerator for one too many days before finding its way into our meal of sautéed noodles, veggies, and Thai sauce. My husband, turns out, has a stomach of steel and this had no effect on him whatsoever. I, however, spent the entire night learning that spicy food should never come back up. You can understand my apprehension about revisiting this cuisine so soon after the ordeal, but have no fear. I was head over heels at first dish for the intoxicating aromas and variety of flavors. Game on.

There are plenty of great restaurants throughout Thailand and you'll get your fill of those while exploring but one of the places you've got to visit is a traditional Thai market. Chiang Mai is known for its diverse markets offering intriguing products such as local produce, handmade trinkets, and - if you're feeling adventurous enough to try them - grubs and crickets. Fun fact - I did not consume such delicacies. But don't let that stop you.

Markets are a big part of the culture in Thailand.

They're not only popular with tourists but are equally loved by locals. This means that you'll be surrounded by happy people who greet you with a smile. The big city bustle becomes enveloped in small-town vibes, and you can really start to feel at home.

Muang Mai is a wholesale market in Chiang Mai with a wide array of mouthwatering produce.

Prices are low and quality is high here - you really can't lose. Swing by the northeastern part of the Old City to check out the tables covered in colorful vegetables and fruit, and to pick up some fresh herbs, fish, or meat to make yourself an authentic, homemade Thai meal.

Once you're good and full and have successfully avoided any slippage into a state of hanger, head over to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to hike, bike, or meditate. You can read more about the park in general here or the temple within the park here.

Happy travels, my full-bellied friends.
