Khum Phaya Resort & Spa - Chiang Mai, Thailand

This is easily the most luxurious place I've ever stayed on vacation. I mean, I do typically sleep on the ground in our tent so I don't have a long list of comparisons but even so, I think you'll find you're glad you checked this place out, too.

I stayed here as part of a tour across Thailand with REI Adventures, which I also HIGHLY recommend. It was the trip of a lifetime and I am forever grateful to have had the experience. We spent the first few nights of our stay in Thailand at Khum Phaya and it was a perfect introduction to the region's flora, architecture, and food.

The Environment

The grounds are a gorgeous display of the local fauna, making you feel right at home in the heart the country. Buddhist statues adorn the walkways weaving between buildings so that even your walk to breakfast has a touch of culture in it.

The Room

Again, I am a bit more of a dirt diva, but the minute I walked into this room I was upgraded to princess status. "Excuse me while I lounge upon my canopy bed and soak in my jacuzzi..." And I know it is a little strange to photograph your hotel shower, but take a quick look to see how you have the option to have water spray from seven - that's right, seven - different directions. Not exactly the sustainable practice you want to incorporate into your daily life but I'll take a few of these showers in my lifetime for a dose of luxury.

If you're curious, the resort's website will tell you that the rooms "...have a minimalist Lanna-style décor with wood floors, teak furnishings and soothing colours throughout, adding a sense of tranquillity to your living space..." They tell no lies, this is tranquility at its finest.

During your stay, you'll have free Wi-Fi, television, air-conditioning, telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities, a hair dryer, in-room safe, and a full minibar. Just try not to ruin your appetite before hitting the swim-up bar at the pool.

Amenities

Choose from indulging in the in-room dining service or devouring your meal at the resort's Kham Saen Restaurant - either way, the food is excellent. You can stay healthy and happy at the wellbeing facilities including a fitness center and Spa Cenvaree, and relax at the swimming pool oasis in the shade of century-old trees.

Location

Khum Phaya Resort & Spa is just a short 20-minute drive from the Chiang Mai International Airport and is only 10 minutes away from the old town where you can find plenty of shops and eateries. You'll be within a tuk-tuk's ride of the Night Bazaar, which is a crowded but necessary experience for an authentic visit in Thailand. I also recommend making the 30-minute trek to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (a Theravada Buddhist temple) that you can read about on my blog here.
